Obituary

On March 19, 2023, Charles Lee Hedgepeth passed away, to be with the Lord forever.

Charles was born on January 14, 1937, in Baltimore, Maryland.  He married Barbara Lane Saumenig on February 15, 1957, and they remained happily married for 66 years!  Charles served from 1957-1962 in the reserve of the United States Marine Corps.  During those years, he completed an apprenticeship as a machinist (1960), and graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a degree in Industrial Supervision and Management (1962).  Charles and Barbara moved from Baltimore to Madison, Wisconsin, where their one and only child David was born in 1967.   Charles had a distinguished career in business, with a focus on medical manufacturing.  He ended his career as COO of Synthes, Inc., a multinational manufacturer of medical devices and surgical implants, and retired in Oro Valley, Arizona in 2002.  He and Barbara have been active in their church, Community Christian Church of Marana, where Dave is the senior pastor.  (Dave and his family have lived in Marana for 16 years, in large part to be close to his parents.)  “Pop,” as he was affectionately known, is survived by his wife Barbara, son Dave, daughter-in-law Monica, and grandchildren Noah and Reese, whom he loved with all his heart.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 15, at 3 pm, at Community Christian Church of Marana.  In lieu of flowers, you are invited to make a donation in memory of Charles to the church.  (An online giving link can be found using the website, www.MaranaDisciples.org; or mail a check to Community Christian Church of Marana, P.O. Box 26, Marana, AZ 85653.)  Unless you indicate otherwise, half of all gifts will go toward the church’s new Community Christian Outreach Center, serving the local community with food, hygiene items, and more – and which Charles was instrumental in helping get built.  The other half will go into the church’s memorial fund, which is used for capital improvement projects.

I was a sincere pleasure to work with Charlie for about 20 years at Synthes. I was responsible for the monument manufacturing operation and Charlie was always there to help, support and mentor.. He was a delight to work with and always brought intelligence and humor into any meeting. I know he was a strong believer and I know he is in a better place. Tom Freestone.
