Obituary

Panos Louis Poulos

July 12, 1922 – January 30, 2016

Panos Louis Poulos, 93, of Tucson AZ, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 30, 2016.

Born in Newport, RI, he was the son of Louis and Athena Poulos (deceased). He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Botany from Rhode Island State College and a Masters degree in Plant Pathology from the University of Delaware.

Panos was a proud military veteran and served as a lieutenant in World War II as a B-24 bombardier in the European theater.  In his early years, Panos was an assistant professor while pursuing his PhD at the University of Maryland.  He later worked at DuPont and Velsicol Chemical before starting his own business in the field of Mergers and Acquisitions.  In addition to being an avid reader and fly fisherman, his hobby/interest for most of his life was being a ham radio operator who made hundreds of contacts throughout the world.  Recently, he was a regular on Skype where he had daily sessions, once again, with people from around the world.  He loved communicating with people.

Panos and his wife, Diane, married 67 years, lived in many cities during their marriage including Newport RI, Newark DE, Seattle WA and Manteca CA. Their longest time in one state was 39 years in Winnetka and Crystal Lake IL where they were able to see both daughters married and all four grandchildren born.  He was very proud of his grandchildren who called him “Pop-Pop”.

Panos is survived by his wife, Diane; daughters Patti Bayers (Mike) and Alicia Engledow, and grandchildren Aimee Simpson (Phil), Jonathan Bayers (Ania), Scott and Kevin Engledow.

A Funeral will be held graveside at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Marana Arizona.  A date and time will be determined shortly. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in his name to the Casa de la Luz Foundation, 7740 North Oracle Road, Tucson, AZ 85704 (www.casafoundation.org).

Panos was a wonderful addition to our lives. His wit, good humor, ability to discuss any subject at length, and gift of putting people at ease will be greatly missed. Until we meet again!
