Shirley B. Philips, most recently of Folsom, California, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2018 at the Folsom Care Center at the age of 89. Shirley was born in Sheridan, Wyoming to Elizabeth and Walter Bales on September 23,1928. She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1945 and went on to college where she studied at the University of Wyoming and Black Hills Teacher’s College to be a teacher. She taught for a while at a one-room school. Eventually, Shirley went to work for the Bureau of Reclamation for 25 years including positions in Cody and Casper, Wyoming and Provo, Utah until she retired in 1987. After retiring, she moved to Mesquite, Nevada. While in Mesquite, she returned to her teaching roots by volunteering with the Foster Grandparents program at the local school, helping students who needed extra help. Eventually Shirley moved to Folsom, California to be closer to her daughter, Caroline. After a few years on her own, unfortunately her health took a turn for the worse and was admitted to the Folsom Care Center.
Shirley is survived by her brother, Robert Bales; children Caroline Kuhn (husband Larry)of Prescott, Arizona, David (wife Diane) of Tucson, Arizona and Daniel; 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service to celebrate her life and to commemorate what would have been her 90th birthday is to be held on September 22, 2018 in Tucson, Arizona at the Marana Mortuary & Cemetery, 12146 W. Barnett Road, Marana, Arizona at 10:00 A.M.
