Gordon Anderson passed away on August 22, 2024, in Tucson, AZ, comforted by his family and strong Christian faith.
He was born in Chicago, IL, to Donald and Elsie Anderson in 1934. His early years were spent in River Forest, IL. He attended Oak Park High School, Wheaton College, Northwestern Dental school, and finally University of Washington’s post-graduate Periodontal Specialty program.
Gordon served in the Navy as a Dental Officer with the rank of Lieutenant at the Marine Corps base in San Diego, CA, and on the U.S.S. Burton Island in the Arctic.
He married Marilynn Holm, of Grants Pass, OR, in 1964, after they both graduated from the University of Washington. Gordon then set up a Dental practice in San Mateo, CA. where their family grew with two wonderful daughters, Lindsey and Tracey.
Gordon wore many hats throughout his life’s journey. He volunteered as a missionary dentist to Ecuador and Central America. After the family moved to Southern Oregon, he served on the Grants Pass City Council, became Mayor, and added two terms in the Oregon State House of Representatives. Many awards and leadership opportunities came his way, and he worked hard to fulfill his responsibilities to his city and state.
Yet he always enjoyed plowing a field on his John Deere tractor, driving his old 240-Z, and leading prayer groups. He especially loved his many years of skiing, rafting, camping, and enjoying roadtrips with his wife and family.
We will greatly miss our dear Gordy, or Papa as he was known to his 5 grandsons. His legacy of love and respect for the Lord and the things that matter most will remain in our hearts.
Gordon is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marilynn (Holm) Anderson; daughter Lindsey (and son-in law, Mike) Champion, their sons Marcus, Steven and Luke; daughter, Tracey Anderson and her sons Ben and John.
Dr. Barrett Anderson, Gordon’s beloved older brother, recently passed away, survived by his wife Regis, and their daughter Lisa.
For those with willing hearts, may we suggest in lieu of flowers, tribute donations may be made to Young Life club of Grants Pass, OR, a youth ministry near and dear to Gordy’s heart.
