Roy W Pederson
Roy W. Pederson, age 98, of Tucson, AZ passed away May 27, 2020. Roy was born and raised in Langford, SD graduating from Langford High School in 1939. He was a member of the school’s 1939 Regional Championship basketball team.
After graduation Roy spent a year working with the Civilian Conservation Corps building earthen dams near Ekalaka, MT. He married Gloria Osness and moved to Lake County Indiana.
He initially worked for Cities Service Oil Refinery and later worked as an electrician through IBEW Local 697. Following that he joined Pipefitters Local 597. Roy was a man of many talents including carpentry, woodworking and wood carving. He was a Freemason, having served as Master Mason of his Glen Park lodge in 1968, and eventually earning his 32nd degree for 50 years of membership. Very proud of his heritage, Roy was a member of Sons of Norway, Scandiana 600 Chapter. He was a member of Grace Methodist Church in Gary, IN. After retirement he loved traveling with Gloria to Europe and exploring much of the USA in their RV.
Roy was a proud veteran having served in the US Army with the rank of Technical Sergeant. He was stationed in the Philippines during its reconstruction. His service to his country was recognized by the Honor Flight Network which escorted him to Washington D.C. to tour the World War II Memorial.
Roy lived in Tucson the last 20 years of his life. He loved the desert, playing cards with family and friends, reading historical books, watching birds and enjoying new friendships at the Aces Senior Club. On his 86th birthday, he realized a long-held desire by parachuting from an airplane. Roy was also “tech savvy” and kept his skills sharp in this ever changing world. His Kindle, computer, and IPhone were always by his side.
He is survived by his children Sharril (Bernard) Chapus of Tucson, AZ; Jeanne (George) Buzuvis of Dover, NH; Joyce (James McNaughton) Lara of Tucson and R Scott (Stacia Yoon) Pederson of Boise, ID; sister Lorraine (Ronald) Lucas of Maple Grove, MN; 12 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and special friend Gatha Bailey. Roy and I became phone pals since he moved to Tuscon. We were in Sons of Norway together and enjoyed many lodge activities. He was one of our past presidents who contributed his talents in many ways for the good of our lodge. When I became president, years later, I could always get his advice re activities and other lodge matters. He was a wonderful friend and always shared a few laughs. Rest in Piece, dear friend, you will always continue to be in my prayers. Miss you greatly.
RIP, Roy. Glad we met you. Torill and Magne, Norway.
